They were strangers on the street, or people I had connected with throughout the past few months. I would place them in front of a white wall, ask them to take off their coat if they were willing to. I would take off my coat too and get comfortable. Often I would make a small adjustment to their look, like flip their hair back or move their collar. I would then set up my tripod and take 3 regular portraits where they looked into the lens. For the last shot I would ask them to look at me instead. I would look into their eyes, count slowly and take the shot. I wondered if their gaze would make me feel something.
